1. Acne is only a "teenage condition"

These days, there are more and more adult acne cases. Many adults are seeing dermatologists now to handle acne concerns.  Teens can, at times, have trouble taking care of skin, which can lead to breakouts.  In adults and children, hormone and testosterone levels can change as well resulting in acne.

2. Acne clears up when you take birth control pills

Know that birth control pills are sometimes used to regulate hormones. However, birth control pills are not given out to each patient specifically to clear up acne.  They are now using drug ingredients in birth control to help control breakouts. Birth control can make acne worse or better, it depends on the case.

3. Acne break outs are worse when you are pregnant

Not true. Some women who are plagued with acne all of their lives find their skin clears up upon pregnancy. This is thought to be due to the estrogen that is being generated. However, not all women who are pregnant get clear skin. Frequently, some women report that they broke out for the first time when they got pregnant.

4. Acne is brought on by stress

Stress itself does not bring on acne. Acne is usually brought on by a hormone fluctuation.  Stress alone will not bring on acne. Stress can affect many other parts of the body as well, and stress is sometimes being looked upon as a good thing now in low doses..

5. Acne is brought on by chocolate

This is a HUGE wives tale.  Chocolate does not now, and has not ever, caused breakouts.

8. The Sun causes acne

Contrary to that opinion, which was stated even by medical doctors in the 1980s, the sun is very likely to make the acne clear up. This is why many dermatologists use light therapy for their acne patients. Although dermatologists are fully aware of the harmful rays of the sun and the risk of skin cancer, the light therapy boxes that they use control the exposure enough to clear up the skin, without over exposing the skin.

9. Steam your face to get rid of acne

Facial steamers are only used during a facial to help to soften the skin, therefore making extractions easier.  It will not remove or take acne away from the skin.

10. Toothpaste will clear up acne

There is no known scientific research behind toothpaste working on acne lesions.  It may feel like a tingle is happening but this does nothing for lesion.
